Base 3

Welcome to Base 3

Welcome to Base 3’s Class Page.

We are a mixed Year 3 and 4 class taught by Mrs Maddock.

We are supported by the fabulous Mrs LLoyd and Mrs Unwin.

SPRING TERM 2026.

This term, the ROMANS are coming! Yes, we will be learning about Roman life in Britain and why they invaded our country. We will learn about the story of Romulus and Remus, as well as the legendary Boudicca. Along the way, we will be admiring some of the amazing architecture in Rome itself, like the magnificent Colosseum below.

PE this term.

Our PE sessions for the Spring term will be taught every Wednesday. Each Thursday, we have Outdoor Learning sessions with Rachael so don’t forget your wellies/walking boots, several warm layers, gloves, hats and scarves.

Reading.

Our book this term is ‘Across the Roman Wall’ by Theresa Breslin.

Above, Princess is using the Reading Vending Machine after receiving her reading raffle ticket.

Make sure you keep reading regularly at home so that you earn your raffle ticket to be entered into the Big Book Bonanza in Friday’s assembly. Ellie won her book just before Christmas after doing lots of great reading.

Maths.

We love maths in Base 3 (so does Mrs Maddock!) Sometimes, we take our maths learning outside.

Here the children have practically practised their rounding skills.

The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check is an important assessment designed to ensure that students have a strong grasp of their times tables up to 12×12.

Mastering these multiplication facts is crucial, as they form the foundation for more complex mathematical concepts encountered in later years. Fluency in times tables not only enhances problem-solving skills but also boosts confidence in handling various math challenges. In order to prepare for this check, it’s essential to practice regularly, helping to improve both speed and accuracy. Every day in school, the Year 4 children will have dedicated time on TTRS to improve their fluency. Let’s work together to make multiplication fun and engaging!

Keep practising your times tables at home – Battles are set regularly for you to compete against others in the class/school.

English.

We will continue to use the ‘Literacy Tree’ which ensures the teaching of English through fabulous children’s literature. So far, we have developed our writing skills using the books Leon and the place between, The Mermaid of Zennor, The Barnabus Project and the Seed of Doubt. The children in Base 3 loved these books and were incredibly inspired by them.

Our first Spring term book in English will be Frindleswylde by Natalie O’Hara.

Previous learning in

autumn Term 2025.

This term, we are are travelling back in time to the STONE AGE! We will be thinking about whether we would prefer to live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age. The children will develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British history, establishing clear narratives and exploring connections, contrasts, and trends over time. We will answer about questions such as How long ago did prehistoric man live? What does Skara Brae tell us about life in the Stone Age?, and Who was this Bronze Age man?

Reading.

This term we are reading Wizarding for Beginners. We have already made predictions about what the characters might be like and what might happen in the story. We used the pictures on the front cover and the blurb to make these inferences.

We love to read in Base 3! Reading comments should be completed in the children’s reading diaries.  Year 3 children need to have read at least four times and Year 4 children need to read at least five times. This is rewarded with a raffle ticket for our ‘Big Book Draw’ every Friday. The lucky winner to be drawn out of the Year 3 & 4 box will receive a book token for the vending machine. Children should make a comment each time they read, using the question starters in their diaries to help them to write comments. Parents and carers are also allowed to comment in diaries if they wish to.

Homework.

Homework is handed out every Friday and books need to be brought back into school by Thursday at the latest. As part of the homework, children will be given a list of spelling words, which are taught through their English work, reading and Maths or English work. We practise our spellings every morning ready to be tested on a Friday morning.

PE.

Our PE sessions for the Autumn term will be taught every Wednesday and Thursday (swimming for Y4s only). Please come to school in your PE kit on these days. Our PE kit consists of the red Randlay PE top, a black hoody and black shorts or joggers/leggings.

Look how smart we look!

No jewellery is allowed during PE sessions. Earrings will need to be removed or covered with tape. Girls – tie back your long hair please!

Lost Things!

We all lose things from time to time. Help us to reunite your child with their items by making sure things have their name in them!
